ATLANTA, Georgia – The Public Interest Law Association (PILA) recently selected local litigator Lance LoRusso for the 3rd Annual Serving Others and Achieving Results (SOAR) Award. PILA is a Georgia State University College of Law student organization that promotes the goals of public interest law. This fast-growing area of law aims to protect the rights of the public at large and more particularly the members of society whose rights go unprotected due to economic disparity, lack of education or prejudice.
PILA selected Lance for this award because he is a problem solver with a true passion for helping those who defend our safety. During each year of his 10 years of practice, Lance handled one or more pro bono cases for veterans and law enforcement officers. The cases include employment issues, housing rights, protection under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), administrative hearings, critical incident response and criminal defense.
Lance worked for 10 years as a police officer before he started practicing law. In 1999, he graduated cum laude from Georgia State University College of Law while working full time as a Cobb County law enforcement officer. Due to his firsthand experience in public safety, he understands the distinct challenges facing veterans and law enforcement officers. He serves not only as their staunch advocate but also their confidant.
"I nominated Lance for the SOAR Award because of his commitment and passion for pro bono representation of US Veterans and law enforcement officers, groups that are often under served by the legal community,” explains Georgia State University College of Law Professor Lynn Hogue. “I hope this well-deserved recognition will inspire others in the profession to step up and help those who put their lives on the line to help keep our country safe."
